What is carbon accounting?
Carbon accounting is the measurement of your organisation's greenhouse gas emissions across scope 1, 2 and 3, compiled into a GHG inventory that tracks those emissions over time. Done to a recognised standard such as ISO 14064, it produces a footprint that holds up to independent verification and regulatory review.
The inventory is not a one-off report. It is the system that lets you see whether your emissions are actually falling, which is what your carbon budget, a science-based target and a carbon tax return all depend on.
Three scopes. One number that has to hold up.
Your carbon tax, your CBAM return and your board target all rest on the same figure. We measure all three scopes so that figure is complete and defensible.
Scope 1
What you generate and use on site, fuel, furnaces, vehicles.
Scope 2
The electricity you buy. On South Africa's coal-heavy grid this is often your biggest lever, and your biggest tax line.
Scope 3
Everything in your value chain you influence but don't own.
Once all three are measured, we set up the data collection so your inventory updates each year instead of being rebuilt from scratch.
Why your footprint matters now
Your carbon tax is calculated on this number. Get it wrong and you overpay; leave gaps and it won't hold up to audit.
The carbon tax is calculated on your reported emissions, so the quality of your carbon accounting directly affects what you owe and how defensible that figure is. Exporters into the EU face CBAM, which prices the carbon embedded in your goods and demands data to match. Companies reporting to the JSE or to investors now carry ESG disclosure expectations that a rough estimate will not satisfy. And any decarbonisation target is unmeasurable without a baseline to measure against.

How this gets handled for you
We set up your inventory and make it defensible. The Advisory side builds your footprint and the data systems behind it; the Verification side independently checks the numbers, so what you report to SARS, a funder or your board has already been through the same scrutiny they will apply.
decarbonisation roadmap and, where you need it independently assured, GHG emissions verification.
