What is carbon and REC advisory?

Carbon and REC advisory is guidance on how to buy, sell and use carbon credits and renewable energy certificates (RECs) to support a clean-energy claim or meet a compliance or voluntary target. It covers which instruments fit your position, where to source credible ones, and how to use them against your carbon tax liability or a net-zero commitment.

For a South African emitter, the practical questions are usually the same. How many credits do you actually need. Whether to buy them or develop your own. And how to be sure the ones you hold will be accepted by the people who scrutinise them.

If you are looking to develop and register your own project rather than buy, sell or retire credits, start with our carbon credits service.

The principle behind every instrument we recommend

    When you need carbon credits

Most organisations reach carbon credits from one of four positions. Each calls for a different mix of instruments, we start by working out which one you are in.

    Carbon Tax Offsets

    Lower what you owe

You have carbon tax exposure and want to use the offset allowance. Phase 2 of the carbon tax increases the room to apply offsets, giving credits a direct rand value against your tax bill.

    EU CBAM Compliance

    Export without border cost

You are exporting into the EU and facing the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), where the carbon content of your goods now carries a cost at the border.

    JSE & ESG Reporting

    Back a stated target

You report to the JSE or to investors under an ESG framework, and you need credits to back a stated target with instruments that hold up under scrutiny.

    Voluntary Net-Zero

Offset what you cannot yet remove

You have made a voluntary net-zero commitment and need offsets for the emissions you cannot yet remove from your operations.

    Standards we work to

A carbon credit is a claim about a tonne of carbon dioxide that was avoided or removed. The registry and methodology behind it are what make that claim trustworthy. We advise on credits certified under recognised international standards, including Verra and Gold Standard, and on RECs traded through established market instruments.

Where you plan to sell credits from your own activity, the standard matters even more, because the buyer will price the credit on how defensible it is. We cover this on the carbon credits page.

How this gets handled for you

Advice on its own is cheap. What you need is advice you can act on and then prove. One partner covers the advice, the verification and the transaction, you are not stitching together three suppliers who each see only part of the picture.

    01 · Advise

    Source credible instruments

When you buy, we help you source credits and RECs from recognised standards so the offset holds up under scrutiny.

    02 · Verify

    Independently check the position

We pair advisory with GHG verification so the emissions position underneath your credits is audit-ready.

    03 · Trade

    Execute through Fuel Switch

When you sell, the trade itself is handled through Fuel Switch, with our advisory and verification behind it.
